In the ancient world, a ‘scholar’ was a privileged person who had leisure time to learn, and at BMA we believe our students are uniquely privileged with weekly Latin lessons. Latin at BMA is compulsory for all, so that all our scholars benefit from the wider web of knowledge and influence with which the language is traditionally associated. Latin vocabulary is explicitly linked to English vocabulary in order that our students become etymologists. Students are encouraged to recognise Latin influences in other languages with which they are already familiar from home, and to make links to terminology across all the curriculum subjects. We teach the culture, history, and customs of the ancient Mediterranean, so that scholars understand and debate the traditions of the Romans, and we also investigate the origins of the city of Leicester as an important Roman town.
